You Say Grilled Cheese, I Say Cheese Toastie

Every family has that one crazy recipe that no one else knows about. You know the one. You describe it to your friends and they look at you like you really are crazy. Heck, maybe your family has a few (I know my family does). Although it seems crazy to those outside your house, these meals are often family favorites.

This is where the cheese toastie fits in my family. Think grilled cheese meets sloppy joe! It is delicious, and so easy to make for a busy week night dinner since every ingredient is most likely already in your pantry. It can easily be customized to your family’s taste as well. We love wheat bread and sharp cheddar, but you could substitute any bread and cheese you have on hand. You could even go healthier with ground turkey.

Growing up this was a normal and frequent meal in my family, but I learned early on in college that not everyone knew about cheese toasties. I remember telling Cody about them for the first time. He had never even heard of a cheese toastie before, but I made them for him anyway. He loved it, and now requests cheese toasties more often than I do!

So the next time you need a quick and easy meal, grab these simple ingredients and make your first cheese toastie!

Cheese Toasties
Servings: 4

1lb. ground beef
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup ketchup
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
cheddar cheese, sliced
bread, 8 slices
butter, softened

In a large skillet on medium heat, cook the ground beef till done. Drain any excess fat from the pan.

Add the brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, onion and garlic powder to the beef. Stir and keep on heat till everything is mixed and heated through. Then set aside.

Heat a clean skillet or griddle pan. While pan heats up butter each slice of bread.

Once pan is to heat, put one slice of bread (butter side down) in the pan, then your cheese, and meat mixture. Top with another slice of bread with the butter side up.

Cook over medium heat until bread is lightly browned. Flip and cook remaining side until lightly brown and cheese is melted. Enjoy!

Such an easy recipe. I hope you all enjoy!
